3. PROCESS WORK
a) Research
I started the project by researching quotes to use and design. I chose some quotes from USA Today and visual examples from Pinterest.
"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." — E.E. Cummings
"It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light." — Aristotle
"Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud." — Maya Angelou

Taken from Pinterest:
It took me a while to choose a quote to design so I drew poster ideas for the quotes which I felt were suitable to be conveyed visually with typography.

Fig 3.2: Early sketches
After brainstorming, I decided to use the first sketch and quote.
"It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light." — Aristotle
To get a clearer view of my vision for the typography, I looked at an image reference from Pinterest.
I then redrew the sketch to make the text more readable by writing it leaning left on the top and leaning right on the bottom.

I also drew a rough sketch digitally on Adobe Photoshop to see how the colours would work out.

I then updated the sketch with more stylized typography

TYPOGRAPHY
After completing the photography elements of the poster, I worked on arranging the typography in Adobe Illustrator.

Fig 3.8: The photo
I separated the quote into two parts, the dark part, "It is during our darkest moments" and the light part, "that we must focus on the light".
For the dark part, I placed it on the dark corner of the image to present the meaning of "darkest moments". I gave emphasis to "darkest moments" by italicizing them and making the words larger.

Fig 3.9: Progress on the dark part of the quote
I duplicated "darkest moments", changed it to darker colour and placed it over the lighter words to create the effect of light hitting the bottom of the words.

Fig 3.10: Continued progress on the dark part of the quote
For the light part of the quote, I placed it on the white part of the photo to better show the meaning of "light". I gave emphasis to the words "focus" and "light" by italicizing "focus" and increasing their size. I arranged "light" to be read vertically downwards to create an imaginary line for the viewer's eye to follow when they look at the poster.

4. REFLECTION
Combining typography with photography really adds meaning to both elements. Going back and forth between the typography and the photo was stressful but I am glad I was able to come up with a poster that fit my expectations.
