Task 3
- Choose one of the 3 sketches from Task 2 inspired from the chosen artwork in Task 1 and develop it into a design while also applying design principles

TASK 3
Chosen Artwork
Figure 3.1: The Fallen Angel by Alexandre Cabanel

Title: The Fallen Angel (L'Ange déchu in French)
Artist: Alexandre Cabanel
Year: 1847
Medium: Oil painting on canvas
Size: 120.50 cm × 196.50 cm

Chosen Sketch
From the 3 sketches I made in Task 2, I chose to develop Figure 3.2.

Figure 3.2: The chosen sketch (line art)

Figure 3.3: The chosen sketch (colour)

Artwork Progress
Before starting, I had to import the sketch into an A4 sized canvas since I mistakenly made it in a 3:4 canvas on Ibis Paint X. I first started by rearranging the figures to strengthen the emphasis of the centre figure. I made the surrounding figures smaller and the centre figure larger.

Figure 3.4: The updated line art sketch

Then I started colouring in the figures. I used yellow for the centre figure and blue for the surrounding figures.

Figure 3.5: Artwork colour blocking progress

Once the colour blocking was done, I coloured the background and clouds and added some details.

Figure 3.6: Progress with clouds and details

After that, I shaded the figures to better bring out the details.

Figure 3.7: Artwork progress with details

After consulting Dr. Wong, she advised to use darker tones for the blue figures and use darker colours for shading to make it more obvious and make the image less flat looking. Referring to her advice, I made the changes.

Figure 3.8 and 3.9: Improved shading

I added white highlights to the blue figures to show the direction of light. I also changed the tone of the background.

Final Artwork

Rationale
In the artwork, I shaded the blue figures in a way to make the central yellow figure the light source of the artwork. I also made the yellow figure larger than the others to give him more prominence.

To Fly Freely aims to present meanings of freedom and standing out. The central yellow figure is the focal point of the image. The blue figures are fully clothed, blindfolded and has decaying wings while the yellow figure is half naked with a tattered blindfold and full spread out wings to show their differences in status. The blue figures keep themselves blind from the world around them as their wings decay while the yellow figure destroys his blindfold and spreads his wings out. As the wings symbolize freedom, the overall message of this piece is breaking free from a life of devoting yourself to something that forces you to sacrifice your freedom.

In this design I used emphasis to give focus to yellow figure by using the contrast of yellow and blue. I also used symmetrical balance by giving the design an equal weight of figures on both sides.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
General feedback: Good progress on artwork
Specific feedback: Work more on the story of the artwork

Week 7
General feedback: Make the artwork look less flat
Specific feedback: Use darker colours for shading and use darker tones of blue for the figures

REFLECTION

Experience
I had fun drawing the artwork as I was very proud of the chosen sketch. It took a long time to get everything right but I'm happy with the final product.

Observation
I still have a lot to learn with digital art as I'm still a beginner at colouring digitally. I hope I'll get better with practice.

Findings
I found it hard to develop my art style on digital media because I'm more used to drawing traditionally with pencil and paper. Even though it took some learning, I was able to draw something nice digitally.
