PROCESS WORK
Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography
Our group voted on the song, Paranoia by Heartsteel which is a fictional band from the game, League of Legends. The song is sung by six singers who each play a character in the band. The song is accompanied with an animated music video.

In a discussion, we each assigned ourselves to the parts of the song. I chose to do the 2nd part of verse 2 and the bridge which is sung by Sett and K'sante. We used the colour palette of each character in their scenes. We used Monument font for all of our parts.

For reference, I watched some kinetic typography music videos on YouTube.

Verse 2 (Part 2)
Fig 2.2: Verse 2 part 2 lyrics

Verse 2 is sung by Sett. I used his colour palette for the background, text and extra elements.

The 2nd part of verse 2 is fast paced. In the storyboard, I highlighted certain words for motion which were verbs or had some emphasis placed on them by the singer. I also included Sett in some scenes.

I drew Sett as a simple outlined silhouette in Ibis Paint X to carry out the actions in the storyboard and imported the stills into After Effects..

I mostly followed the storyboard and only made large changes in scene 4 and 5. The line "I don't gotta" was meant to move from scene 4 to scene 5 and stop for the words "zig zag" to emerge from underneath it in a Z shape. I changed it so that scene 4 and 5 would be separated.

Since I wasn't familiar with After Effect's camera function, I had to refer to tutorials to learn the one-node camera.

Bridge
Fig 2.12: Bridge lyrics

The bridge is sung by K'sante. I followed the same style as verse 2 part 2, using K'sante's colour palette and including him in the scenes.

The pace of the bridge is a bit slower than the rest of the song with an emotional setting. I wanted to reflect that in the scenes where K'sante is present.

Again, I drew K'sante and the Eiffel tower in Ibis Paint X and imported them into After Effects.

The changes I made from the storyboard were to change scene 7 to continue on from scene 6. The line "On life support, life goes" is very quick so I thought that it would be too much transitioning for a fast line. I changed it so that the camera would pan to the right for the lyrics to appear.

Fig 2.21 and 2.22: Scene 7 amendment

Other than that, scene 11 and 12 were combined into one scene with a minor change to the word "repeat".

Once everybody completed their parts, Irdhina, Jia Xuan and Emily edited the segments together with transitions for consistency.

Exercise 4: Pie Chart
I was assigned to animate this line graph infographic.

Fig 2.26: Given graph

In After Effects, I gave the chart a different look by adding frames. They were animated to grow from the starting point on the bottom left corner.

Fig 2.28: Keyframes for frame lines

I followed the demo from the tutorial class for the line graphs. I made each line have different speeds whereas green is the slowest while red and blue are faster.

Exercise 5: Vector Animation
For this exercise, I was assigned to animate this Illustrator file. I edited it to fit the 1920 x 1080px dimension.

Fig 2.33: Vector file (JPEG)

Referring back to the tutorial shown, I separated each layer to prepare them for animation only keeping the angpao packets in the background. I then imported the Illustrator file into After Effects. I wanted the fans and the clouds to appear first before the characters, so I set the clouds to drop down and the clouds to move and fade in.

I set both the bunny and human to appear from below. I added puppet pin animations to the bunny's head to make it nod. I also set puppet pins in the flowers.

I set the coins to appear along with the sparkles. Finally, the heart speech bubble came in last and bounced in scale.

FEEDBACK
Week 4
For the line, "Make em dig that", let "that” stay visible longer (Verse 2 Part 2).

Week 5
The music video is well done.

REFLECTION
I learned a lot of After Effects animations while doing Exercise 3. I'm glad that our group cooperated well and produced a final product which I'm really proud of. I applied all that learned from there into Exercise 4 and 5 as well. All of this really made After Effects less scary to use but I still have a lot to learn for this software.
